Blank Screen Flicker In BFBC2 Fixed In Catalyst 12.2?

UPDATE 2: I even see Medal of Honor flickering on a GTX 570M, so… not AMD’s fault?

UPDATE: Medal of Honor still flickers, even if you force the BC2 profile. At least it doesn’t flicker much, just little blips sometimes.

There is an interesting line in the release notes of the Catalyst 12.2 drivers: “Random flickering is no longer observed when playing Battlefield Bad Company 2 in DirectX 11 mode.”

I will have to do more testing, but those blank screen flickers might be history, even on my 4870×2 in dx10 mode.

I have from time to time black flickering on 12.2 x64 but not so much… in BC2 i have some dots… or small squeres flikering sometimes but restarting application solve it…

CCC Fan Control dont work (as almost always)…

    Maya 2012 is lagging more…

i also seeing OpenGL greed dots sometimes but application restart solve it too… so i cant say its better more like 10.3/10.5a still best but old?

@Daniel, my fan control always works fine, never seen new artifacts anywhere & the only ones i know of that exist are skyrim+MSAA or crysis dx10 in some of the trees

Its strange.. i have used driver sweeper, i have Sapphire HD4870x2 with BIOS

(i have read about some newer bios releases killing Vram by higher voltige but i dont know how its with newest BIOS (last ones))

CCC fan control dont work much often (about 3-4 drivers from 12 driver version releases).

Every time if something become fixed another things became messed.

@Daniel, i’m the same card same bios (actually i modded the bios to speed up the fan, works great, no unusual problems)

never had a problem with fan control in all the time since they released it (around 8.11 or something?), remember you need to enable overdrive for the fan slider to ‘do’ anything, maybe use another app (rivatuner, afterburner, etc) to control the fan if your CCC still wont

i have not tried this year’s betas, only WHQLs (if there is a fix for a game in a beta driver, i just use the dx or ogl dll file & put it in the game folder instead of installing the whole driver, you could try this too if maya is really too slow now)

Ah, i was trying modify fan curve in bios too, but i have some strange issue, every time if i try use winflash PC freez, if i try using MSI afterburner PC start freezing after few days of using (i liked Afterburner because of fan curve), i also cant using stand alone AMD overdrive (its already implemented in driver or its still exist as stand alone application?) that stand alone version gimme freezing too :(
So im afraid trying flash Bios of HD 4870×2 because i dont know what happends if it freez in middle of flashing :/ maybe issue is 4x2GB sticks… im on AMD platform i was forced also put away Audigy 2 because with Win7 SP1 & HD4870x2 caused win logon freezing…

i try it flash, i will put away 2 DDR sticks and… should i do it in Win 7 Safe Mode? or normal?

    i changed values to:

    Tmin: 50 C
    Tmax: 100 C
    Duty Cylce Min: 35%

    Tmin: 70 C
    Tmax: 114 C
    Duty Cylce Min: 27%

is it ok? (i want tweak temperature but not make jet engine :) )

    should i change something else?

@Daniel, well the official safe way to flash is in dos mode, but i used winflash without a problem (in vista64, maybe there are updates for 7), also my RBE was 1.22

    original bios ramp:
    modded ramp:

an interesting thing i noticed is i would set some settings in RBE, but after flashing, the numbers shifted a bit, you couldnt get as exact as you wanted with the ramp’s tmin/tmax

most important, make sure all .bin or .rom files you’re thinking of flashing are 128kbytes or the card will be killed!

here, i’ll post my stock & modded bios files,×2-bios-withmod.rar

one thing to consider, my fan is starting to buzz/rattle/die lately, i dont know if speeding up the minimum to 38% caused this or if it’s all the dust in my place, my card has been in use since september 2008, & i didnt mod the bios until october 2009 (before then i would set to fixed speeds like 70% when in a game)

I have HD3870x2 before… in that time i was running PC almost 24/7 and fan get damaged in 1.5-2 years period… damage was that fan somehow “dropped” on lower spot and its chafe against upper (ruby, asus, sapphire or whatever) long plastic cover… but it still worked.

(Graphic card in PC, fan facing down, if card was put on side (like desktop case) fan stopped chafe.)

  9. 9 Daniel said at 6:57 pm on April 12th, 2012:

Uff, look like your settings where pretty aggressive for fan :D you maybe stress it too much. Im little bit pissed because Accelero Xtreme HD4870x2 is no longer available and there are no other alternative for air cooling HD4870x2 or are? still at least that accelero come up, with HD3870x2 it was nothing :D

  10. 10 kn00tcn said at 8:02 pm on April 12th, 2012:

nobody is selling used acceleros? i think that cooler is overkill though

i made my fan less annoying actually, by default it would be quiet then suddenly get really loud & be at 100 degrees! now it ramps up (AND down) as the load is going up, works pretty nicely, it barely goes to 65% if the room is cool & the dust is low

i spent a couple days/several hours tweaking the ramp, quite satisfied with what i made :P (btw 38% is right before the humm noises start)

  11. 11 Daniel said at 5:57 am on April 13th, 2012:

    “nobody is selling used acceleros?”

On i dont see anyone, i think that most people already sold it (card was killed because of accelero first revision issue or they already upgrade to newer Graphic Card) from time to time maybe some people pop up but i have no time hunting them.

i do not sell my graphic card (collecting) and sadly i was forced stay with HD4870x2 longer then i intended and i want to have functional HD4870x2 in my collection not dead :D especially if i see MEMIO temperature in games aroud 105 C on second chip :(

very expensive and dying most soon and drivers get bad quick too :( they could at least put fan in middle, maybe it would blowing some heat into case but GPU temperature would be much more normalized and there would be no such pressure on PCB where one half is aroud 50-76C (closer to fan) and second reaching 86-100 C (away from fan)….and of course … that “fantastic” lead free soldering

  12. 12 kn00tcn said at 6:17 pm on April 14th, 2012:

hmm well they’re still ‘designed’ to reach 120 as the shutdown temp, 90-100 is the official operating temp

drivers havent been too bad, almost every single CF issue affects everyone else, not just our cards, but the good thing is since the card is old, we can use really old dll files (for example 10.4 opengl) that newer cards cant use for fixes

i’ve heard of a lot more 8800gt deaths than 4870×2 deaths :P, oh & another option is water cooling, or just make your own mod of the stock cooler somehow
