Improving Tribes Ascend Crossfire & Vsync Performance

UPDATE: I have tried the game recently, looks like the current driver profile doesn’t scale very well and maxes out GPU usage, so I will just force AFR and not care about any flickers I spot. You do still have to force triple buffering unlike Hawken.

Set TribesAscend.exe to use the AFR-Friendly or Mass Effect 3 profile, either from CCC or RadeonPro. Now most importantly, use D3DOverrider to force triple buffering if you want to use vsync. Enable vsync itself from the game or with D3DOverrider, but the main thing is to have triple buffering forced. Seems certain Unreal Engine 3 games struggle and stutter with the internal game vsync.

If the rare flickering bothers you (ski training, shadows on gun when you start and aim around), try the Hard Reset profile, but the framerate might be a tad slower.

So i changed thermal grease and temperature dropped a lot (-10c) but i still have greed 1px dots and some black squares (small) in 3D apps (load) so maybe some thermal pad maybe dont work well on cooler (i thing that thermal pad on one Vram was little bit black, looks like they where toasting little bit :/ ) but this issue with green dots started with 10.10

so i hope it fixing with new thermal pads
(of vram is damaged it would be sad:( )

i also can say that i modified bios fan and i realized that squares artifacts vanish if i push fan to ridiculous 60-70% .

(of vram is damaged it would be sad:( ) i mean
(if vram is damaged it would be sad:( )

you can edit it right? :D you can delete these typo comments

@Daniel, looks like your vram or even gpu is starting to die if the artifacts disappear when the fan is faster

temps dropping 10c makes sense if lots of dust was removed, not just the paste change (especially for newer cards, the stock paste usually is quite nice)

Hello kn00tcn, I’m really struggling to run Tribes: Ascend on my 6870 xfire… Could you give me a link or a video tutorial on how to setup Catalyst Control Center or RadeonPro to force xfire?

-open CCC, go to 3d application settings
-scroll to bottom, click the CF mode dropdown, select ‘afr friendly’
-scroll back to top, click the save button while ‘new application’ is selected in the dropdown, select ‘tribesascend.exe’ from your tribes folder (\tribes\Binaries\Win32\)
    -close CCC, play tribes

if you use vsync, you need to force triple buffering with d3doverrider or else it will be stuttering/lower fps than expected

Thank you very much kn00tcn, it resolved the stuttering problem too.

So got bought new HD4780x2 from my programmer and + HD5670 to collection… now im ont HD5670 and HD4870x2 is in box :D but this one HD4870x2 is older then mine (its get also white dots on down side cooler bracket, mine has more soft ones and black).

maybe i tortured my HD4870x2 too much (not now but 2years ago i was very heavy gamer and lots of torture experiments with crysis graphic modifications, ZIP/RAR gpu password cracking too). even bigtower with lits od cooling didnt save that GDDR get burned :( im very dissapointed with dual chip cooler, it was real shock to see that’s inside, such hungry and hot wasting card and they put there 2 very simple copper blocks, some more cheaper and less hot wasting cards got heatpipes and much better cooler design but HD4870x2 even newer got just simple blocks :(

@Daniel, it cools pretty well for the heat it generates actually… if you’re doing torturing, raise the fan speed, watch the temps, & always clean dust
